11 Albanian prisoners escaped from the high security prison in Trikala, 320 km from Athens.
BBC says that the institution was attacked with firearm and grenades, leaving two employees wounded. The prisoners used ropes to get on the ground.
The fire exchange continued even inside the prison and the situation was solved only after the intervention of the commando forces.
Police raised several roadblocks and they are currently using a helicopter to find the prisoners and their collaborators.
According to the Greek media, the 11 fugitives are Albanian citizens, sentenced for robbery and theft.
Police found 400-500 bullet shells and traces of the grenade explosions.
“Kathimerini” newspaper says on its web page that the prison was attacked by 6 to 16 people.
A Prosecutor was sent at the area, while the Ministry of Justice will investigate how the automatic rifles entered the prison.
Another escape was planned last month in Triakala with the help of a helicopter, but the fast intervention of the police made Panajotis Vlasos fail with his attempt.
This took place one week after another Albanian prisoner tried to escape by taking six people hostage. /top-channel.tv/
